It is with pleasure that we welcome you to visit with us via the Internet. Our Churches have a deep desire to share the good news of what it means to be a part of the family of God. Our wish is that all may experience the joy of being involved in a caring church. It is hoped that by your visit to our site that you will see that our churches try to be concerned about the total person, and that our attempts may help with some of your needs. There are many in today's world willing to sell you happiness. There are many in the name of Christ willing to give you easy “sound-bite” answers to your problems and difficulties. We are not willing to do that here. We know that the world has problems. We know that people have a difficult time making ends meet, and that they are struggling to keep schedules and are wondering about their children and are trying to keep the bills paid. We here at Shuck and West Point Churches believe that the job of the church is to try and not burden you with more problems and legalistic steps to climb, but to give you keys to make your life a bit more manageable. We desire to give you “good news”.
Our churches do not judge you for what you have or where you have been or what you have done. Our job is not to be the judge, but rather our job is to reach out with true Christian concern and caring. We believe that the church should be involved in the total life of persons and community. The church should care about the economics of the community. The church should be concerned about housing and transportation and day-care and education processes. The church should be involved in the questioning of injustice and bigotry and prejudice and hatred to any person or group of people. We believe that the church is called to lift the hurting and the sick and the downtrodden and the oppressed. We are not a church preaching American culture, but we are a church striving to follow our Christ.
Do we always manage to reach our mission and goals? No we do not, but we are a people who continue to try to be all that we have been called to be. We do make mistakes. Please forgive us for those. We strive to also be willing to look beyond your mistakes! That is the church.
As an American Baptist Church we are part of a great tradition of people who believed in these ideals. Our denomination is a very diverse group. (Even within our two churches here in the Greenbrier valley one will find a wide range of theological temperaments.) At our churches we do not dwell on where someone may be theologically, but rather how their life is changed and used by God. Our denominational tradition has included people like Roger Williams, Walter Rauschenbush, Martin Luther King, Jr., Tony Campolo, Edwin Dahlberg and the list goes on. There have been men and women with vision and compassion who have played a vital role in our heritage.
We are proud to continue that heritage and tradition at Shuck and West Point. We are inclusive churches trying to reach into our world the way that Christ would expect. You are welcome to join us in worship. Come and be a part of this exciting place!
